JERBE Project Extension and Upgrading Protocol Signed
The Joint Ethio-Russia Biological Expedition (JERBE) Project was established based on an agreement signed between the Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission and the Russian Academy of Sciences and has been in action for more than three decades. Based on the protocol signed on December 14, 2017 the JERBE project will be upgraded in to Joint Ethio-Russian Biological Research Center in the year 2018. The JERBE project one year extension and upgrading protocol which will be a time for preparation to establish the new joint research center is signed by Professor Andrey V. Adrianov on behalf of the Russian Academy of Sciences and H.E. Dr Ing Getahun Mekuria, Minister, Ministry of Science and Technology of Ethiopia.
Message from the Minister
H.E. Dr.-Ing. Getahun Mekuria Kuma has been appointed as the new Minister for Science and Technology beginning the 1st of November 2016. The appointment is part of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn's cabinet reshuffle that came in the first week of November.
H.E. Dr.-Ing. Getahun has served the Ministry for the past two years as State Minister and Director General. Previously, H.E. Dr.-Ing. Getahun worked for the Addis Ababa Institute of Technology of Addis Ababa University in different academic and management capacities. He earned his BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering from Addis Ababa University. He completed his PhD degree in the same field at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. The appointment of H.E. Dr.-Ing. Getahun as the Minister for Science and Technology is expected to galvanize the transformation process that the Ministry has already embarked on.
H.E Dr Ing. Getahun Mekuria, Minister of Science and Technology of Ethiopia has addressed the 61st General Conference of IAEA at Vienna International Center, Vienna. The Minister said that Nuclear Technology is used in Ethiopia for peaceful purposes in Agriculture, Food Safety and Human Health sectors. He stressed the need for strengthened technical cooperation between the Agency and developing countries. He also condemned the weaponization of Nuclear energy and called for diplomatic solutions to resolve the current tensions in the Korean Peninsula.
